What Makes Acid Flow Measurement Different
Acid service attacks many flow meter materials. Stainless steel bodies fail quickly in hot hydrochloric acid. Rubber liners swell in nitric acid. But engineers often overlook the liner. A PTFE or PFA liner is not optional for most acid lines. It is the only practical barrier between the process acid and the flow sensor body.
We see this on customer sites in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. A buyer in Vietnam replaced three alloy flow meters in one year because the liner could not handle phosphoric acid at 70 degrees Celsius. The next meter used a PTFE liner and a tantalum electrode. PTFE vs PFA Liners for Acid Flow Meters
PTFE and PFA are both Teflon class fluoropolymers. PTFE offers very high chemical resistance. It handles most acids including hydrofluoric acid up to moderate temperatures. PTFE liners work well from -40 degrees Celsius to 130 degrees Celsius in typical acid flow meters. PFA is a melt processable fluoropolymer. It is less porous than PTFE and gives a smoother liner surface. PFA liners reduce material build up in dirty acid streams.
For hot concentrated sulfuric acid, PFA is often better. It withstands vacuum and thermal cycling better than standard PTFE. For room temperature acid transfer, PTFE is a lower cost option. Both materials prevent acid contact with the meter body.
Electrode Materials Matter
The liner is not the only wet part. The electrodes also contact the acid. Silver Instruments offers several electrode options. Tantalum works for concentrated sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. Platinum is preferred for hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. Hastelloy C suits weak acids and mixed chemicals. Titanium is only for dilute oxidizing acids at low temperature.

Installation Notes for Acid Service
Do not install a Teflon lined electromagnetic flow meter in a vacuum. Vacuum pulls the liner away from the pipe wall. If your process has vacuum, ask us about reinforced PFA liners. Use grounding rings when the pipe is non conductive. Plastic pipes need grounding rings. Our team can supply tantalum grounding rings for strong acids.
Keep the sensor full of liquid. Vertical installation with upward flow works best. In horizontal lines, place the electrodes in the 3 o clock and 9 o clock positions. This keeps the electrodes wet even when the pipe is partially full.

Can a PTFE lined electromagnetic flow meter measure hydrofluoric acid? Yes. PTFE and PFA liners resist hydrofluoric acid. Use platinum electrodes for best results. Tell us the acid temperature. Hot hydrofluoric acid needs special handling.
What is the minimum acid concentration for an electromagnetic flow meter? The acid must have a conductivity above 5 microsiemens per centimeter. Most process acids meet this. Pure water with acid traces may not. We can check your fluid properties.
